We'll be taking a look at scriptures so… if you’re able, get your bible, maybe a notepad, find a place to relax and push play!
In this podcast we’re getting into one word used in the Bible that is actually translated into English from two different words in the Greek. It’s important to know the distinctions when reading in order to get the fuller understanding as we know there are many out there crying out for it… a fuller understanding. The ancient Greek is considered amongst scholars to be the most descriptive language ever developed. So it’s no wonder to me God’s Word concerning the Grace Administration is recorded in this most beautiful language.
So we’re taking a look at the word, “unbelief” in this podcast. Any evangelical type… or any Anon veteran can tell ya the struggles to be had when speaking truth. For this one word we know as unbelief, there are basically two words in the Greek. That we see our one word in the text. They are…
- Apistia
Strong’s #570: negative faithfulness, lack of Christian faith - unbelief.
Bullinger: faithlessness, untrustiness; distrust, unbelief, applying to all, without regard to their circumstances, or opportunities of knowing the truth.
You can think of apistia as not hearing enough to believe. Ignorance. Like when a child first becomes afraid of the monster under the bed.
- Apeithiea
Strong’s #543: disbelief (obstinate and rebellious):-disobedience, unbelief.
Bullinger: unwillingness to be persuaded, wilfull unbelief which opposes itself, hence, unbelief in action, disobedience, restricted to those who have heard and know the truth, (a stronger term, therefore, than No 1, [apistia] and denoting an actual manifestation of it.)
apeithiea is having heard but refuse to believe. What we call “cognitive dissonance” in our modern world. Like an adult afraid of the monster under the bed.
We’ll go over a few verses in the podcast where these two words are translated as our one word, “unbelief.” Show you how to make the distinction in the immediate context of the verse. And how to recognize which type of unbelief is in play in the text when the word isn’t used. So that you might recognize these two types of unbelief when you read and study. Take some time, look up the usages of apeithia. It’s important to understand when unbelief is being referenced to the hard-hearted.
